That the 1985/86 municipal pay plan be amended as follows: Adopting the new position of Assistant Supervisor of Utility Mechanics - Grade 28, and making it a part of the pay plan 85/86 and adopting the job description, attached hereto. Seal) /~ounc~ll Member ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR OF UTILITY MECHANICS NATURE OF WORK Under the general supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor, performs a wide range of skilled work in the maint- enance and repair of water and wastewater treatment plant mech- anical equipment and systems. Incumbent. will supervise others in the use of tools and maintenance procedures; schedule and assign work. Instructions are received either orally or in writing and may be somewhat complex in nature. Work may be reviewed while in progress or upon completion. Performs other work as requested. The employee is required to exercise consid- erable independent judgment and initiative in carrying out his duties. Performs routine and complex preventative maintenance tasks. Tests motors and pumps; identifies any needed repairs and execunes. Rechecks any problem areas. Tests auxiliary generators and pumps. Repacks pumps. Must be proficient and experienced at electrical welding of all kinds of metal pipes and fittings as well as proficient and experienced at acetylene welding. Assigns and schedules the work of semi-skilled and skilled workers to assist in any or all of the above tasks; trains person- nel in the subsection. Maintains current files and records of repairs and pre- ventive maintenance. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Working. experience of a master mechanic, preferable on heavy equipment; graduate of a standard high school or vocational school supplemented with auto and diesel mechanics at an advanced trade school; or any equivalent combination of training and ex- perience. UTILITY MAINTENANCE MECHANIC I NATURE OF WORK This is skilled work in water or wastewater treatment plant in the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment and systems. The employee in this class is responsible for the technical aspects of all equipment installations, repair and preventive maint- enance. The employee supervises and instructs employees of lesser rank in the daily work routine to include use of shop tools and maintenance procedures. The employee will prepare work schedules and assign work crews as maintenance requires. Instructions are received orally or in writing from a supervisor and the employee is expected to work with relative independence in carrying out the instructions. Work is subject to inspection by the plant super- visor while in progress or upon completion. The employee in this class does have latitude for making independent judgement and decisions with- in the established policies of the department.
